In the summer of 2017, I had an opportunity to be in charge of the exhibition space at the Royal Canadian Institute of Arts (RCIA), where we were looking at a project called Gurlitt.
At the time, I was a little hesitant about doing it, as I was really excited about the idea, but the first week was all about the art.
We worked in the studio for two days, working on different styles of gurlits, and finally we had something.
I was actually blown away by the amount of art I was able to create.
I got a little bit nervous about how the artwork would turn out because I’m an artist, but as soon as I started to work, I realised I was absolutely in control.
When I look at the artwork now, I have a lot of admiration for the work.
I’m really excited to share it with my family and friends.
Gurlits have always been very influential to me and I think that’s why they’re such a popular subject for art.
The concept of gURLitt is to create a painting or sculpture that can be viewed by someone who is not in the same space.
I’ve always had a big interest in the human form and I love the way they’re made.
The idea of being able to communicate something through art is a powerful one.
GURLITT is a partnership between the Royal Canada Museum and the Art Institute of Ontario.
It will be on view at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Mississauga from September 18 to October 18.
