This month marks the one year anniversary of the release of The Future of Design: Art for a Sustainable Future, which was published by The Art Gallery of Ontario and the University of Toronto Press.
We’re looking back at what the book was all about.
What was it about?
The book is about how the art world is changing and, more importantly, how we can continue to create art that can help solve the world’s most pressing issues.
Its premise is that we need to be creative, but also responsible.
The book asks us to take the time to think through the world and ask ourselves the questions we would ask ourselves if we were designing an art project.
We can’t just design something and expect it to work out, because that would be too easy.
Instead, we need creative input from a wide variety of people, with varying levels of expertise, to make sure that the result looks good, feels good and performs.
And, importantly, to ask ourselves: Can I get more people to help me solve these problems?
We need to create a culture that is driven by empathy, and not by fear and hate.
It’s time to ask, can I use my creativity to create something that feels good to the people who are using it?
This isn’t about just making an art that someone can see, but rather something that is valued by people who care about what’s being created.
What do you need to know?
If you’re interested in learning more about how to do this, read more about the book, or start thinking about what you might do with your creative ideas, the book also includes some tips and tricks to help you think through your designs.
If you’re looking to get a better idea of how to think about art in the future, the Art Gallery’s Creative Thinking for Art exhibition runs from October 6 to 20 at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.
The Art Gallery will have a special exhibition of The Art of The People: A Global Journey of Transformation, which is also the opening event for the book.
It showcases works by international artists, including French artist Jean-Claude Rastan and American artist Jaimie Burdette, who are exploring themes such as resilience and resilience in contemporary art.
