An art exhibit by the Oscar-winning actor and director James Cameron is one of the most anticipated in recent memory, but some of the pieces that the New York-based institution will showcase are not entirely his.CNN sat down with the creator of “The Abyss” and “A Scanner Darkly” and filmmaker and screenwriter Christopher Nolan to discuss the exhibition and how his film and film-making have influenced the art world.
We wanted to start with this: The Abyss is the only film I’ve ever directed, which is really, really cool.
It’s a very different sort of movie to me, and it’s been such a fun experience.
There’s just so much more to it than just the story.
I was in a movie theater in New York for two years, and they’re like, “How much of this are you going to do?”
And I was like, I’m just going to go into it like I’m a fan of movies, and not like, this is what I’m doing.
I love what I do, but I’m not going to tell you to watch a movie, you know?
And that’s really what we’re going to try to do.
We want to bring out a lot of the art that James Cameron made, which he’s been able to do so well.
We’re going through a period of time where we’re trying to do that now.
The art in the film, the art in this film is so much better than what we did before, because it’s a totally different sort, but also just really powerful.
And you have to take it on.
So, yeah, it’s going to be a great thing.
I hope everyone who’s coming out and watching it is excited, and I hope they like it, and hopefully they’ll be able to experience it.
You know, you could say that about a lot and, you are lucky.
I’m going to make some mistakes, and that’s okay.
I will be honest.
I know that’s a lot, but it’s really just a reflection of how much you enjoy the work.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone through drafts and then realized, “Oh, you’re going in a very strange direction.
You’re not going in the right direction.”
So, if I’m having a great time with the movie, and there are things that I love about the movie that I’m trying to get rid of, then I will.
I’ll make those changes, and then I’ll do it.
We are a small team.
We do have people who are not really good at directing.
I’ve known some directors that, they’re really good, but they just don’t want to do it, so they’re not really great at directing, and you know, we’re all trying to make the movie.
I think the people that do want to direct and do it well are really good.
And we want to be very respectful of them, because they are good people and we have a lot to work with.
So, I think it’s just a process.
You start off with the idea and the story and then you kind of do it slowly, you get to know what you like and what you don’t like, and sometimes it’s kind of like an art show, where you’re like what is this going to look like?
And then, once you’ve made it, you have a very specific idea of what the movie is going to end up looking like.
You just kind of put the pieces together.
It is very different from any other work I’ve done, so there’s definitely going to some challenges.
But, you always have to give yourself some leeway.
I think it really comes down to a combination of both.
I feel like the art is very organic, and really, it just takes a lot more time and energy.
I mean, I really enjoy working with James Cameron, but, yeah.
He’s got a lot on his plate.
But it’s fun.
I don’t know how else to put it.
The most important thing is, I try to create an environment where people feel comfortable in a way where I can really get a sense of their thoughts and feelings and how they’re feeling about things.
I have to be really clear about what’s going on with the film.
I like to make sure that it’s very honest, and people can actually get that.
It has to be, like, a lot different.
It should be like, the director says this.
That’s it.
That means it’s not a commercial project, but that’s the spirit of it.
So I’m like, okay, this will be the story of this movie.
It doesn’t have to feel like a commercial thing.
It will be like a story.
The director will be involved in a lot.
